IS 505 Information Organization and Access

Catalog Description: Emphasizes information organization and access in settings and systems of different kinds. Traces the information transfer process from the generation of knowledge through its storage and use in both print and non-print formats. Consideration will be given to the creation of information systems: the principles and practice of selection and preservation, methods of organizing information for retrieval and display, the operation of organizations that provide information services, and the information service needs of various user communities.

Required M.S. in Library and Information Science degree core course.

Instructors' Course Description:

This course focuses on the information organization and access through the following themes:

  1. Describing resources with metadata

  2. Knowledge organization

  3. Collections and search systems for access

The course meets in person once a week in Room 219 Gregory Hall for two hours and fifty minutes. In addition, students are expected to participate regularly throughout the semester in class activities and discussions through our Canvas page.

IS 505 aims to provide an intensive and thorough introduction to the fundamentals of information organization and access from the point of view of the field of library and information science. The course is not an introduction to LIS as a whole or to the profession of librarianship—the focus is squarely on information organization and access. Over the next 16 weeks, you will learn about foundational concepts, theories, and principles, as well as people and organizations. The material covered is broad in scope and applicable to a wide variety of settings and systems related to LIS and cognate fields. Reading, writing, and discussion about course topics will be a large part of the work of the class, through weekly discussion posts and in-class discussions complementing the lectures. Opportunities to personalize to your interests come several times in the semester, first with the semester-long final assignment on the search process, which starts in week 2. You will also have choices in the assignment on the information behavior/information needs of a group/patron type of your choice. We incorporate professional leadership posts that encourage you to practice defining and directing your own professional development needs as an emerging information professional.
